On March 24, 1980, the tiny minority of the rich in El Salvador had Archbishop Oscar Romero murdered in the capital. The Church of the Poor, which he represents, is understood as an attack on the prevailing property relations and privileges. Today Romero is an advocate of a different globalization based on empathy, solidarity and justice. The central messages of Romero's sermons make us sit up and take notice that they are urgently topical in a world in which few individuals have more possessions than the poorer half of humanity.
